Building a Decentralized Internet
Filecoin is enabling open services for data, built on top of IPFS. Today, Filecoin focuses primarily on storage as an open service, but the vision includes the infrastructure to store, distribute, and transform data. Filecoin TL;DR highlights Filecoin ecosystem progress with simple, straight-forward language anyone can digest.

There are 3 core pillars of Filecoin: Storage Markets, Retrieval Markets and Compute over Data. These capabilities are enabled by 2 critical protocol upgrades: the Filecoin Virtual Machine, and Interplanetary Consensus. The Filecoin ecosystem is building towards those goals, with Storage Markets being the first that was rolled out in October 2020.

Filecoin and
the FIL token
Filecoin today is a decentralized storage network with over 14 EiB in capacity. The token in this network is called FIL. Filecoin Storage Providers (SPs) can provide storage capacity for the network, earning units of FIL by periodically producing cryptographic proofs of the data capacity provided. In addition, Filecoin enables parties to exchange FIL currency through transactions recorded in a shared ledger on the Filecoin blockchain.

As Filecoin expands its capabilities towards retrieval, programmable applications and on-chain compute, there will be further utilities for the FIL currency in the Filecoin ecosystem
